Looking for angles in Scott Brown coverage
posted on February 5, 2010
From increased truck sales to action figures to a genealogical link to President Obama. Can the media find any more angles on the new Senator? Now that’s he’s on the job, will the coverage change?

What a difference a week makes. Less than 7 days after being sworn in as our latest Senator we learn that Scott Brown has hired a Washington Attorney to land him a seven figure book deal. Joe Sciacca was perceptive in his comments about "cult of celebrity". Does anyone remember the relentless drumbeat mocking Obama's 'celebrity status' during the presidential election? "He's the biggest celebrity in the world. But, is he ready to lead?", questioned a McCain campaign ad, played over a soundtrack of near-ecstatic rally supporters chanting "Obama! Obama!". Yet somehow we are to believe that truck and jacket rallies with adoring crowds, a Playgirl pedigree, an American Idol daughter, a Barbara Walters interview, and now an ink-barely-dry book deal are ... not about celebrity? As Kara Miller said, "His life story was his story, but soon that's going to change". Well, maybe not quite as soon as we hoped.
